Crock pot is a house hold name for
many years. But as more and more crock pot recipe ideas are opening up, using
the crock pot slow cooker as an ideal cookware is getting more acceptance. It is
a convenient mode of cooking because of its slow cooking concept.
Crock pot cooking is easy and
convenient. It makes cooking simple as you have to cut some
vegetables and meats and place it inside the crockpot. Add the
ingredients and the rest will be taken care of by the crock pot.
Unlike the cooking on stove or in the oven it does not need constant

thermostatically controlled electric heating element. Usually the
lid is made of transparent glass. You can use it as a cooking pot
and a heat reservoir.

Actually crock pot is a brand name and in normal usage the trade
mark name is used generically for slow cooker. Crock pot was
originally developed by Naxon Utilities Corporation Of Chicago under
the brand name Naxon Beanery All purpose cooker. In 1970 Naxon was
bought by Rival Industries and reintroduced the cooker under the
'Crock Pot' brand name. At present Sunbeam Products of Jarden
Corporation owns the brand.
Crockpot is a counter top
electrical cooking appliance, useful for low temperature cooking.
Its feature of keeping low temperature for many hours allows the
user to have unattended cooking of pot roast, stew and other dishes.
It is not suitable for all type of cooking. It has removable
stoneware inserts.
You can get crock pot slow cooker from 500ml to
7 liters. The temperature range for the slow cooker is 160°F
on the lower side and 190 to 200°F
on the higher side. One hour on the higher side is followed by an
indefinite time at medium heat. Temperature below the boiling point
of water is maintained. There are smart and programmable crock pots
available in the market.
Recipes prepared in the usual way
should be modified to suit for the slow cooking. Slow cooker has
both advantages and disadvantages. It avoids over cooking. The long
cooking hours is an advantage as you can set the crock pot to slow
cooking when you leave for the work and it will be a great relief to
have the meal ready when you return.
The low temperature and the glazed
single pot of the slow cooker cut short your washing work. If you
have night time cheap tariff charges, then you can switch on to
overnight cooking. Inexpensive timers are available for crock pot.
The disadvantage is that the vegetables lose trace nutrients when
slow cooked.
Boil raw beans prior to slow cooking
as some times the low cook temperature may cause food poisoning. The
canned beans not require pre boiling. Care should be taken to avoid
hazardous happenings. In a two heating elements crockpot when one
element is out of contact with the liquid or food due to
insufficient liquid, it will lead to local overheating and the
ceramic pot may get cracked or the metal may get melted down.
Crock pot slow cooker is an ideal
kitchen appliance to home cook your meals in between your daily
hectic schedule. Home cooking avoids taking junk food from outside and crock pot
is the perfect appliance to help you in your kitchen task.
